How to do the Student Case Study

(Revised…August 2009)

Each *Formative Assessment System (FAS) document listed and underlined below is a component

of your Case Study…for both the English Language Learner and the Special Population

student.  Each of the two Case Studies must contain the following documents highlighting

your Case Study student…remember, you are not to use last names of any students.

*  Pre-Assessment Iceberg

Complete each section of the document for your Case Study student.

 Identify specific learning needs for this student on the form.

*  Instructional Grouping

Using the “Instructional Groups” document, highlight the student you are following for

your Case Study; include all students in the identified instructional groupings that you determine,

and implement strategies for differentiating instruction for your Case Study student.

*  Lesson Plan

Design a standards-based lesson in the content area you have chosen for your Case Study student.

You may choose any of the lesson plan formats provided in your FAS documents.

*  Analysis of Student Work

Use the FAS document titled, “Analysis of Case Study Student Work” with your English

Learner student, and the document titled, “Analysis of Student Work-Special Education”

with your Special Education Case Study student.

Analysis of student work is critical to your learning as well as your students’.

Include in your Case Study samples of other student work with your Case Study student’s

work highlighted, along with any rubrics used for assessment.  On the FAS documents,

you will notice prompts to respond to.  Feel free to expand the boxes as necessary

for your more detailed responses.

*  Support Provider Observation

Both you and your Support Provider have copies of resources that will help you in setting up the

Support Provider Observation of the lesson plan you have designed for this Case

Study.  Be certain to meet ahead of time to discuss what your Support Provider will

be seeing, which type of observation format will be best for this lesson, and any

particulars you would like to pinpoint.  Use a Collaborative Assessment Log to

document the post-observation discussion with your Support Provider

*  Parent Communication

Build a partnership with the parents of your Case Study student.  Include any

notes, forms, or records of phone calls and emails that you have used to build a

solid relationship with the parents of your Case Study student.

*  Reflection on Case Study

Your reflection paper needs to be approximately two pages long…enough

room for you to reflect on the growth of your student, and your own growth as related

to your Individual Learning Plan content area. What is it you wonder about in terms

of supporting this student’s learning and understanding?  Were your goals for this student

met?  Why or why not?  What was successful about your planning and implementation

of those plans?  What might you change or do differently next time?  These are only

ideas that you might like to respond to.  Use your own reflective strategies to tell the

reader about this student.
